Some folks will tell you that PM’s don’t need to understand technology to manage a technology project. While we would agree that a PM’s understanding does not need to be at the level of those folks actually sweating the technical details, don’t be fooled by thinking that only general Project Management skills are required and the technology can be left to the other project team members.
Conversely, a PM that knows their way around financial statements, cash flow concerns, budget processes and who can relate to C-level execs in language they understand is a big bonus to any project.
The more your PM knows about the guts of the project, both the business and technology aspects, the better.
