Opportunity Everywhere in IT

Posted by Rich Crowley in IT

Canada isn’t producing enough computer science graduates. So says most of the popular press and IT media I’ve been reading lately. Enrollments in post-secondary computing programs, at both college and university levels are down, both in Canada and the United States. The exception appears to be the University of Waterloo – good for it!

I don’t want to debate why this is the case but from my perspective, within my client base, there is a ton of opportunity for solid IT people. The pace of technical change is very high and change usually brings with it the need for organizations to adapt or be left behind. Programming skills in mainstream technologies like Java, .Net, etc. are in high demand. Good designers are in short supply. Project managers who can speak tech and business lingo are valuable everywhere I go.

For young people who want to see the world instead of living in a cubicle in spot for years at a time, technology offers more every day to help you accomplish your travel goals and earn a good living. Companies doing business across multiple locations, countries, continents are more the norm today than the exception. Outsourcing to places like India, China, Russia etc. is only increasing the importance of being able to work in teams, manage teams and communicate well.

With boomers set to retire in large numbers over the next 20 years, there will no doubt be more disruptions to staffing models ahead. In spite of the doom and gloom about wars, recessions, aging populations, the world is still full of opportunities for those who look and are willing to work hard and nowhere is this opportunit greater than in the IT realm.

On Not Planning Too Far In Advance…

Here's a couple of lines from the movie Casablanca that should amuse planners everywhere:

Yvonne: Where were you last night?
Rick: That's so long ago, I don't remember.
Yvonne: Will I see you tonight?
Rick: I never make plans that far ahead.

What’s in a name?

The Green Shore is real and exists as a wild and rugged expanse of rock and evergreens on the shore of a central eastern Ontario lake.

From south western Ontario, it is the prize at the end of a journey that, regardless of how well planned, always provides a few wrinkles and surprises.

However, the journey proves worthwhile every time and as such, is a neat metaphor for our work here at this company.
